This heathers in this section of the garden, planted in
late 1998, are shown at the beginning of their third growing year. During
this juvenile stage they have put most of their energy into growing an
extensive root system. |

Once the roots have been established, the plants grow very
rapidly. This picture was taken only three months after the one above. |

By the middle of the following year's summer, the heather
planting has become much more mature. These plants have now been in the
ground for nearly four years and have also been pruned several times. |
